How Long Do LED Neon Signs Last? An Honest Answer
Search this question and you'll find answers ranging from "8 years" to "100,000 hours", often on the same page. That's not because sign makers are lying; it's because "how long does it last" is really three separate questions wearing a trench coat. Let's take them one at a time.
Question one: how long do the LEDs themselves last?
Quality LED neon tube is rated for 30,000 to 50,000 hours of operation. That's not the point where it dies; it's typically the point where the LEDs have dimmed to about 70% of their original brightness, which is the industry's standard measure of useful life.
Translated into real usage: at 6 hours a day, 30,000 hours is nearly 14 years. At 12 hours a day, a shop sign's life, it's about 7 years before you'd notice meaningful dimming. Left on 24/7, you're at 3.5 to 5+ years of literally never being switched off.
For a home sign used in the evenings, the honest answer is that the LEDs will outlast your interest in the current decor. Bedrooms get repainted before neon tube wears out.
Question two: what actually fails first?
Here's the bit most lifespan articles skip. In practice, LED neon signs rarely die because the LEDs wear out. When a sign stops working, it's almost always one of these, in rough order of likelihood:
The power adapter. This is the workhorse component and the most common failure point across the whole industry, usually after years of service, sometimes sooner on cheaply made signs. The good news: it's a plug-in part. A replacement adapter costs a modest amount and swapping it takes thirty seconds. A dead sign is very often just a dead adapter.
The dimmer or remote. Small electronics between the plug and the sign occasionally give up. Again, replaceable part, cheap fix, and an easy way to diagnose problems (plug the sign in without the dimmer; if it lights, you've found your culprit).
A connection or wire. Signs that get moved around a lot, event signs, market stall signs, can eventually develop a loose connection where the cable meets the sign. Repairable in many cases, and much less common on signs that go on a wall and stay there.
The acrylic backing. This only fails one way: something hits it. Acrylic is far tougher than glass, but a dropped sign can crack, and cracked acrylic can't be repaired; the LED tube can't be cleanly transplanted to a new board, so a serious break usually means a replacement sign. This is why decent packaging matters so much in delivery.
Notice what's not on the list: the tube gradually fading into uselessness. With decent LED density and a proper adapter, gradual dimming is a distant, slow process rather than a practical concern.
Question three: how does that compare with traditional glass neon?
Glass neon is the odd one here; it can last longer than LED, and also fail much sooner. The glass tubes themselves, if never broken, can glow for decades and can even be re-gassed when they eventually dim; there are working glass signs from the 1950s. But the transformers fail every 8–15 years, single tube repairs are specialist work at £50–150 a time, and one knock ends everything. Glass neon lasting decades is real, but it's decades with a maintenance relationship. LED neon lasting 10+ years is decades with basically none.
What shortens an LED sign's life
A few things genuinely matter:
Cheap components. The gap between a quality sign and a bargain import is mostly invisible until year two. Low-grade adapters fail early; sparse LED chips run harder and dim faster. This is where a chunk of the price difference between a £45 sign and a £150 sign actually lives.
Moisture on an indoor sign. Steamy bathrooms, unheated summerhouses that condensate, or indoor signs used outdoors. Water in the connections is the quickest way to kill a sign. If there's any doubt, buy outdoor-rated.
Constant on-off cycling. Flicking a sign on and off dozens of times a day stresses the adapter more than steady running. Normal daily use is fine; if you want automated scheduling, a timer switching it once or twice a day is perfect.
Heat sources. Mounting directly above a radiator or cooker gives the electronics a harder life. A bit of distance costs nothing.

What a warranty tells you
Because the realistic failure points are the electronics, warranty length is one of the most honest signals of build quality in this industry. It's the maker betting their own money on their components.
The market standard is 12–24 months. We back our signs with a 3-year warranty as standard, and the reason we can is boring but true: better adapters and denser LED tube fail less, so a longer promise doesn't cost us much. A well-made LED neon sign, used normally, should give you 8–15 years of real-world service, with the most likely "failure" in that time being a £15 adapter rather than the sign itself. Buy from someone whose warranty suggests they believe that too, keep water away from indoor signs, don't mount it over the hob, and the sign hanging on your wall today will still be glowing when the room around it has been redecorated twice.
