How to hang your sign

Hanging your sign is a quick DIY job, and the fixings come in the box: stand-off studs (each one has a base, a cap and a screw) and expanding plastic wall plugs. You'll need a pencil, a drill and a screwdriver, plus a hammer if the plugs are a tight fit.

Check your wall first

The wall plugs in the kit are expanding plugs, suitable for solid walls such as brick or block, and for some plasterboard. If a plug doesn't grip firmly in your plasterboard, or you're fixing to tiles, wood or another surface, you may need different fixings. Your local DIY store can recommend the right ones, or ask a handyperson if you're unsure.

  1. Step 1

    Mark out the holes

    Hold your sign against the wall where you'd like it to hang and mark through each of its pre-drilled holes with a pencil. Then set the sign aside.

  2. Step 2

    Drill and plug

    Drill a pilot hole on each mark and push in a wall plug. If a plug is tight, tap it gently with a hammer until it sits flush with the wall.

  3. Step 3

    Fix the stud bases

    Unscrew each stand-off stud to separate the base, cap and screw. Hold a base over a wall plug, pass the screw through its centre and tighten it into the plug with a screwdriver. Repeat for every hole.

  4. Step 4

    Attach the sign

    Line up the holes in your sign with the bases on the wall. Screw a cap through one of the holes to hold the sign in place.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat and tighten

    Fit the remaining caps in the same way until the sign is held at every fixing point. Tighten them all firmly, but don't overdo it, as over-tightening can crack the acrylic.

  6. Step 6

    Plug it in!

    Plug the dimmer remote receiver (if purchased) into the clear power cable on one end and the black mains cable into the other. Then plug in the mains power supply, or the battery pack, and you're good to go!

How to hang your sign

Bought the ceiling hanging kit? Your sign hangs on two steel wires. Each runs from a plate that screws to the ceiling down to a clamp that fixes through one of the two pre-drilled holes along the top of your sign. You'll need a pencil, a drill and a screwdriver, plus a hammer if the plugs are tight. The Allen key comes in the kit.

Check your ceiling first

The plugs in the kit are for solid ceilings. On plasterboard, screw straight into a joist (no plug needed) or use ceiling cavity fixings rated for your sign's weight. Not sure what's above? Ask a professional before you drill.

  1. Step 1

    Mark the ceiling

    Hold your sign where you'd like it to hang and mark the ceiling above its two top holes, then set it aside. Centre a ceiling plate over each spot and use a pencil to mark its two screw holes.

  2. Step 2

    Drill and plug

    Drill the four holes and push in the plugs, tapping them flush with a hammer if they're tight.

  3. Step 3

    Fix the ceiling plates

    Hold each plate over its two plugs and screw it firmly to the ceiling. The wires now hang down, with a clamp at the end of each.

  4. Step 4

    Open the clamps

    At the bottom of each wire, use the Allen key to undo the clamp's screw, then take it out.

  5. Step 5

    Clamp on the sign

    Slide the top edge of the sign into both clamps so its holes line up, then push each screw back through and tighten it with the Allen key. Stop once it's firm, as over-tightening can crack the acrylic.

  6. Step 6

    Adjust the height

    To raise or lower one side, push up the small spring-loaded collar at the bottom of its ceiling fitting, where the wire comes out, and slide the wire through. Let go and it grips again. Repeat until the sign hangs level.

  7. Step 7

    Plug it in!

    Connect the dimmer receiver (if purchased) and the mains cable, then plug in and switch on.

Batteries: the remote takes 2 × AAA batteries (not included).

Range: works from up to 20m away, and your sign remembers its last brightness and mode.

Connection: the receiver plugs in between your sign and its power supply (5.5 × 2.1mm DC).

Care & help

Keeping your sign glowing, and who to call if it isn't.

Keep the mains power supply and any accessories indoors and dry, even with a waterproof sign. If your sign lives outside, we'd recommend bringing it in during storms and frost rather than leaving it out all year round.

Switch it off at the wall and unplug it first. Then wipe the acrylic and the neon with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid sprays, polish and abrasive cloths, which can mark the acrylic.

Check the 2 × AAA batteries (not included) are in the right way round, that the receiver is plugged in between your sign and its power supply, and that you're within 20m of it.
